Release and support
Canonical released Ubuntu 26.04 LTS in April 2026; 26.04.1 became available in August. Standard security maintenance ends in May 2031. Ubuntu Pro expanded security maintenance runs to May 2036, with a separate Legacy add-on to 2041. The original article incorrectly claimed 2038. LTS does not mean identical support terms for all packages and third-party applications.
Kernel and desktop
The release ships Linux 7.0 and GNOME 50. A newer kernel supports various platforms, but does not guarantee faster performance on every PC. GNOME changes include accessibility improvements and Reduced Motion. Test particular devices and drivers against the release notes.
Wayland and applications
Ubuntu Desktop uses Wayland; many X11 applications can still work through XWayland, so it is wrong to say every X11 program stops working. Test remote desktop, screen sharing and software dependent on Xorg before upgrading. Release notes confirm Resources replacing System Monitor and improvements to the Ptyxis terminal; do not assume unverified universal Nautilus speed multipliers.
TPM encryption
TPM-backed full-disk encryption has better compatibility guidance, PIN support and recovery-key prompts during sensitive changes. It is not suitable or available on all hardware and does not always remove boot interaction. Store the recovery key away from the device and read official limitations, especially with third-party drivers or unusual storage layouts.
Upgrade carefully
A supported route goes directly from 24.04 LTS to 26.04 LTS; the 26.04.1 point release began prompting LTS users gradually. From 22.04 LTS, upgrade to 24.04 first. Check official notes for other or customized installations. Make and verify a backup, update existing packages and test applications, drivers and services before migration.
