Separate symptoms
Microsoft reported that some desktop backgrounds appeared black when personalization settings failed to load after August 2026 updates. Some mouse pointer preferences could also revert. These symptoms do not necessarily indicate faulty hardware and do not affect every PC.
Check and recover
Run winver, open Windows Update and install the latest cumulative update appropriate for your version after reviewing known issues. Restart and inspect Personalization and pointer settings. On a managed computer, consult IT before changing policies or uninstalling an update. A black wallpaper is distinct from a black screen after sign-in discussed in other release notes.
