Install Apache OpenOffice on Windows: requirements and steps
Download Apache OpenOffice from the official site, follow its Windows installer, and check optional installation methods.
Apache OpenOffice is a free, open-source office suite with Writer, Calc, Impress and other components. Here is a practical installation guide for Windows. Download it from the project’s official site so you can check the source and version.
System requirements
The Apache OpenOffice 4.1.x requirements list Windows 10 and 11 along with several older Windows editions. They specify 256 MB free RAM (512 MB recommended), around 650 MB free disk space for the downloaded installer and at least 1024 × 768 display resolution. Being listed does not mean an old Windows release still receives security updates. Some database and accessibility features need a suitable Java runtime; ordinary documents can be used without it.
Method 1: download and install
Open https://www.openoffice.org/download/, choose your language and the Windows build, and follow the project’s download link. Verify that the downloaded file is the expected Apache OpenOffice installer before running it.
In the Downloads folder, open the installer, usually named Apache_OpenOffice_..._Win_x86_install_....exe. Windows may ask for confirmation. If the installer extracts files first, choose a temporary folder you can find again.
When extraction finishes, the setup program should start; if it does not, open Setup.exe in the extracted folder. Follow the wizard, leave the default installation folder unless you need another location, and complete installation.
Start Apache OpenOffice from the Windows Start menu. Keep the installer or extracted setup files until you have tested installation and repair; if disk space is tight, consult the project’s instructions before removing them.
Other installation methods
If you see a Microsoft Store listing, check its publisher and source before installing. A Store search result is not automatically an official Apache build. On systems with Windows Package Manager, first search the repository and verify the publisher, source and current package identifier rather than relying on an unverified Store product ID.

Troubleshooting and file formats
If setup does not open, check the downloaded file, Windows security message and available permissions; download it again from the official site if needed. Do not bypass warnings without checking the publisher. OpenOffice can coexist with Microsoft Office. It can open many Office documents, but complex .docx or .xlsx formatting and features may not round-trip perfectly; keep a copy of important originals and test the output.
Conclusion
After installation, open Writer or Calc and try a sample document. For current downloads and requirements, use https://www.openoffice.org/download/ and https://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_aoo41.html.
