Run Windows apps on Linux with WinBoat

WinBoat is an open-source project that presents applications running in a Windows virtual machine as individual windows on a Linux desktop. It is different from Wine or Proton, which run Windows programs through compatibility layers. Windows remains a separate guest system and requires appropriate licensing.

How it works

The WinBoat desktop app manages Windows in a VM inside a Docker or Podman container. Its guest component communicates with Windows, and FreeRDP plus RemoteApp present app windows in Linux. You can also open the complete Windows desktop. The result can feel integrated, but compatibility and performance depend on the application, graphics needs and host resources.

Features and limits

The project offers guided setup, an app list, an integrated desktop view and file sharing through a mounted home directory. Sharing your home directory gives the guest access to those files: decide what you want to expose and back up important data. Apps requiring GPU acceleration, special hardware drivers, kernel-level anti-cheat or DRM can fail; do not assume universal compatibility. WinBoat remains in beta and may need troubleshooting.

Requirements and setup

The project lists at least 4 GB RAM, two CPU threads, 32 GB free storage and KVM virtualization enabled. You also need FreeRDP 3 and either Docker with Compose v2 or a supported Podman setup. Docker Desktop is not supported. Check the current README before installation because supported runtimes and packages can change.

Getting started

Download a Linux build from the official releases page. AppImage, .deb and .rpm builds are listed; follow the package instructions for your distribution. Confirm virtualization and the container runtime work, then run WinBoat’s setup wizard and select the Windows edition and resources. Provide a valid Windows license or use it under the applicable Microsoft terms.

Using your applications

After Windows setup, launch its full desktop or select an installed program from WinBoat’s Apps list. Windows programs execute inside the guest, even when their windows appear on the Linux desktop. Keep the guest system updated and use a backup plan for both guest data and shared files.

Conclusion

WinBoat can help keep selected Windows applications available when using Linux. Test the specific programs and peripherals you need before relying on it. Official site: https://www.winboat.app/ ; source and current requirements: https://github.com/winboat-org/winboat.
